In the world of NEO JAPAN NIGHTS, small machines keep the night. They tend the lamps, keep the time, and steady a hand. This is a field guide to a few of them.
Andonmori (行灯守) — the Lantern Keeper

Division: Field (crown badge)
Posted at: Okinawa Sunset Line (NJT-03), station platforms and town alleys
Role: Tends the lamps at the feet of travelers and in the windows of homes after dark.
A knee-high, round machine whose body is a paper lantern, with brass legs, rivets and two small arms. It began as a small light placed in the homes of elderly people who feared dark roads and power cuts.
Station Master (駅長型)

Division: Field (crown badge)
Posted at: Stations in every city, each with its own regional variation
Role: Keeps the timetable, guides travelers, and bows to every departing train.
Its heart is a mechanical movement like a pocket watch, the engine that keeps the trains on time. Cutaway below.
Tsuemori (杖守) — the Staff Keeper

Division: Service (plain badge, because it touches people)
Posted at: Care homes, households and shopping streets
Role: Walks beside a person and steadies them when they stumble.
A small machine shaped like the handle of a wooden cane with a round head, low and stable on its feet. It was born in care homes, from the wish to keep one fall from becoming the end of walking.
Inside the machines

Each machine carries a different heart: a wick furnace, a clock movement, a pendulum of balance. Full cutaway illustrations and design notes for more of the field guide are in preparation. Coming soon.
All visuals are AI-generated or AI-assisted. The concept, the world and the designs are original creations by the channel creator. Every machine is fictional.
